Invitation to Blog on NewGenLIbOpenSource

Users of NewGenLib Open Source Integrated Library Management System (ILMS), you now have a Blog on which you can make your own postings and see what other users feel, say and look for.

The blog is a more unstructured forum for exchange of views, opinions and knowledge about the software and ideas too. The blog supplements the Sourceforge.net discussion forum which is more for the user/developer communities to seek help from each other.

I hope we can make the Blog a worthwhile spot for all users of the open source offering

Thanks Kshema and Seema. I think one of the good things that users of open source should know is that:
1. Metadata records being input into the library's database can be designated as Open Access records. In other words, an insttitution's scholarly contributions (e.g., peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, reports, etc., could be entered and designated as oprn source. It is usual for such records to be associated with a digital attachment, e.g., a full text PDF or Doc file
2. All such records then become accessible via any OAI-PMH Harvester.
3. The OA metadata records and digital content are searchable/viewable via the NewGenLib OPAC as well.

I would like to know the capability of the system in bibliographic resource sharing and copy cataloging. What is the database structure based on, Marc 21 or any other.
Can this be used to import data from LOC and OCLC or any other z39.5 servers

Congrats. Dr. Haravu

Great initiative. I installed newgenlin on both windows and linux (fedora core 3) and trying to compare Koha and newgenlib against a few standard parameters - module-by-module.

I am responding to the posting of Mumtaz.

Mumtaz,

One of the strengths of NewGenLib is the seamlessness with which you can vopy catalogue recirds from a MARC-21 data source such as the Library of Congress (LoC). The import is achieved via a direct search of the LoC and then saving the required metadata record as a UTF-8 MARC ISO record (this is one of the options in the search page of the LoC OPAC). The iso-2709 record is saved to the clipboard and then pasted into the NewGenLib Import catalogue records window. Once this is done, the record can be viewed and/or edited in either of NewGenLib's cataloguing templates: a. Simple template, 2. Generl template, or 3. MARC-21 template. You may like to see a windows movie file of this process at http://www.verussolutions.biz/NewGenLib_videos/importmarc.wmv

Regarding using a z39.50 client for copy cataloguing. Yes, please download an open source z39.50 client, e.g., Mercury, and install it on your client. You can then do a federated search of the various library catalogues already configured in Mercury and then download a MA%C record which you need to save to a local file, which is then imported into NewGenLib.

Dear Dr. P S Mukhopadhyay

Glad to hear that you were successful in installing NewGenLib on both windows and Linux (Fedora Core 3). I am thrilled to learn that you are doing some benchmarking of NewGenLib with Koha. Please share your findings with all of us when you are ready. Thanks.

Respected Dr. Haravu

I want to know two things first -

1> Is there any discussion forum for newgenlib? If yes, let me know the URL.

2> The report generation utility of newgenlib contains no sub menus. Instead, it asks for going to http://localhost:8080/desktop/Launch address. When I enter that address in browser, it fails to connect.

In this context, let me know

1> shlould I download the desktop.war file from sourceforge?

2> If yes, what is the location of dumping the war file? is it deploy folder of jboss?

Dear Dr Mukhopadhyay

The NewGenLib discussion forum on sourceforge.net is accessible at, http://sourceforge.net/forum/?group_id=210780

The NewGenLib desktop application has also been uploaded to sourceforge.net. Go to the downloads page and you will see on the bottom of the page the file deskktop.war.zip. This has to be downloaded. Unzip this file to the Deploy folder of Jboss.

Detailed instructions on how to deploy the Desktop application are given in the user manual alos available at the sourceforge site as a PDF file. Pl download this and follow the installation and deployment instructions.

Do let me know if you were successful.

Sir,

I want to install NewGenLib on Linux. I am using Fedora 7 for this purpose. If I select Postgres at the time of installation of Fedora, what would be the steps to install NewGenLib after Fedora 7 is installed completely? Postgresql 8.2 is bundled with Fedora Core 7. In that case do the binaries should also correspond to v8.2?

Otherwise if I do not opt to install postgres server while installing Fedora 7, how do I go about installing postgresql v8.0.15?

I did try to follow the linux installation steps provided by NewGenLib but could not succeed.

Since I am new to using Linux I request you to kindly guide me with detailed installation steps. I apologize for giving you trouble.

Regards,

Kshema

Sorry, I didn't mean to delete my post, I was asking if SVN was an option but see that CVS is there. Great work on this project.

Jai Haravu said...

Hi Kshema

We have not tried out NewGenLib with Fedora 7 but I beileve it should not pose a proble. I think you should still use Postgres 8.0, the one recommended in our installation notes. Pl follow the installation notes for Linux carefully.

Hi artunit

We would like to invite other developer communities to download, use and enhance the software. Let me know if you can help.

Jai Haravu said...

The community-based discussion forum has been active and this is indeed good news. From a quick analysis of the postings on the discussionn forum, http://sourceforge.net/forum/?group_id=210780 I find that the maximum number of support issues are on installation problems. This is as it should be beacuse a number of people new to NewGenLib will obviously need help on this.

However, I would request all those who wish to seriously continue working with NewGenLib should get themselves a free login and password and all their postings should be made as authorized members.

From March 1, 2008, the moderator of the Sourceforge.net will not allow anonymus postings.

Respected Sir,

I am responding a little late to the remarks that made you feel bad and your subsequent fitting reply to the commentators. I feel very sad and sorry for such unprofessional behaviour of seniors. On one side there are seniors like you in the field from whom we youngsters (at least me for sure) derive motivation and professional values and there are people who sport such unethical behaviour too. What sort of lessons do we budding professionals learn?
My only reaction is that people who comment this way are very unfortunate that they cannot identify a gem from other worthless stones. May they be blessed with sense of discrimination.
I do not mean to be any personal though.

Dear Kshema

Many thanks for your kind words and feelings about the criticism of NewGenLib that appeared in Lis-forum. I was sad because it was voiced in Public and not based on facts.

However, I would like to reassure all our users via the blog that we welcome constrctive criticism and suggestions that will enhance the software.

Best regards.

I installed NewgenLib on Windows XP platfrom as per your instructions.but this S/W isn`t working

Jai Haravu said...

Chetan Sonawane

You must give more details of the problem you faced after downloading the software from sourceforge.net. Please post your problem on the sourceforge.net discussion forum.
1. After starting the server, open your browser and enter http://localhost:8080/newgenlibctxt. If the OPAC opens that means that you the installation is fine.
2. If you don't see the OPAC, that means that it is not connecting to the database and in all probability, you may not have restored the database.

Please send more details of where you found the problem and its details. Haravu

Thank You Once again.

Please include the simple procedure for taking backup and restoration process of database.Make it simple by storing to the folder that we select and restore from their through browz and select.

Include some reports (need for AICTE) ie.1.Total volume available on a particcular Subject area (like MBA/MCA) and Total title for the same.
2.Total amount spend for a perticular subject area in one financial year.

Simplyfy the report procedure by introducing in the same software window .Now it is asking for desktop application in another window and asking for password again.

sir please include our institute name also in your website/installations ie.Sree Narayana Guru Institute of Science and Technology (SNGIST),North Paravur,Kochi,Kerala.
